Spine Conditions
Spinal problems can cause chronic pain and restrict your movement. Our clinic treats common spine-related conditions using gentle, non-invasive methods. We focus on correcting alignment issues to relieve pressure on nerves, reduce pain, and help you move freely again. If your pain stems from a recent injury like a car accident or a workplace incident, be sure to also check our Injuries page for targeted information.
Sciatica
Sciatica refers to a set of symptoms – namely, pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates from the lower back or buttock down into one or both legs. It can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning or shooting pain that makes standing or walking difficult. The hallmark of sciatica is that it follows the path of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in your body, which runs from your lower spine through the hips and down each leg. If you’ve ever felt pain shooting down the back of your thigh or calf, or experienced unexplained weakness in a leg, it could be sciatica, inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

Some patients say that all they did was bend over to pick up a piece of paper and they were hit with extreme pain. They don't understand how an easy task caused them so much pain. The reality is that their condition was probably developing over years of time, that piece of paper just happened to be the last straw. Most spinal problems don't happen overnight, they build up over years of time. Chiropractic adjustments can alleviate pressure on the sciatic nerve, reducing lower back and leg pain. By restoring proper alignment in the lumbar spine, we help relieve sciatica and improve your mobility.
How Long Does it Take to Correct Sciatica?
Treatment length for sciatic pain can vary significantly from patient to patient. Some people respond very quickly while others take more time to recover. It depends on the condition of the disc or the joints that the chiropractor has to correct. In most cases, the longer the issue persists, the longer it will take to achieve correction. The great news is that it typically takes less time to fix an issue like this than it took to create it.

Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, which can lead to uneven posture, back pain, and muscle strain. Typically, it begins as a minor bend in the spine that gradually progresses. In fact, for the diagnosis of scoliosis to be made, there must be a minimum 60-degree sideways curve of the spine. Once the spine has advanced to this stage there are often severe health consequences. The good news is that if the spine is cared for properly during its early stages, it can be prevented from advancing over time.

While many cases of scoliosis affect the younger population, it can also develop in older adults. As people age, degenerative disorders such as osteoporosis cause the bones in the spine to lose their normal shape. As a result, the body begins to compensate by producing lateral curves in the spine to ensure that the head remains level. In such cases, if the cause of the bending is not addressed, severe consequences including heart and lung problems may develop.
An x-ray examination is the most effective means of detecting scoliosis. Various orthopedic examinations such as the Adams position test can assist in the diagnosis. Our chiropractors at New Freedom Chiropractic will also examine the hips and shoulders for un-leveling and also check the legs for variation in length which can be a clue to the development of scoliosis.
Scoliosis Treatment
We start with a thorough examination, including postural analysis and often an X-ray to measure the degree of curvature. If the curve is mild or moderate, chiropractic adjustments and specific exercises can be very effective. We use gentle adjustments to improve the mobility of the spine and address any areas of the spine that are misaligned or restricted. By enhancing the spine’s function, we aim to reduce muscular tension and imbalance around the curve. We’ll also give exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the spine and improve core stability. We also discuss lifestyle factors: ensuring good nutrition (for bone health), proper school backpack use, and ergonomics for growing children, as well as addressing any leg length differences or other factors that could exacerbate a curve.
For adult scoliosis, the approach is similar – improve spinal alignment and joint motion as much as possible, which often alleviates pain and prevents further worsening. Many adult patients are relieved to find they can stand straighter and have less discomfort with regular care.
Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc issues occur when the cushioning discs between your vertebrae wear down over time or due to injury. This can cause persistent back or neck pain, stiffness, or nerve pain (like numbness or tingling). Chiropractic care helps by improving motion in the spine and reducing stress on affected discs. Through targeted adjustments, we aim to relieve pain and support the health of your spinal discs, so you can stay active with less discomfort.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Disc Degeneration?
Chiropractic care can significantly slow down degeneration, improve disc and joint health, and sometimes reverse degeneration by addressing the root causes. By keeping the spine in proper alignment and moving as it should, we reduce abnormal wear on the discs and joints. It is like wheel alignment on a car – if the wheels are straight, the tires wear evenly and last longer; if misaligned, they wear out quickly on one side. In the spine, a well-aligned vertebra helps the disc above and below to stay hydrated and nourished. Regular adjustments can help bulging discs retract by relieving pressure on them and improving joint motion. Many patients with degenerative changes find that chiropractic care greatly reduces their pain and stiffness, allowing them to remain active without relying on constant pain medications.
We also incorporate physiotherapy modalities and exercises to strengthen the muscles around the spine, which provides better support and relief. For instance, core strengthening exercises can offload stress from a degenerating lumbar disc. We’ll guide you in ergonomics as well – how to protect your back during daily tasks and avoid further injury.
