This didn't make me too happy! Want to know why?

Our brain craves certainty and the feelings of being right. Our brain loves to feel in control and our brain tries to avoid loss. As an example, have you ever been to a restaurant where they have too many options for dinner? Or a coffee shop with many different brew styles and flavors? How do you feel in the instant of making a choice? You feel happier after the decision is made, but there is stress with too many choices, analysis paralysis. Our brains loves certainty!

Last blog we discussed the left prefrontal cortex, the happy centre in our brain. You also have an area that shuts off the happy centres in our brain called the amygdala. When something increases our doubt, our amygdala shuts off key areas in our brain involved in rewards and happiness.

So how can we change this and become happier? Here are 5 simple strategies:

  1. Share some love: invest a moment doing something to brighten a loved one's day.
  2. Gratitude: call or email someone and thank them.
  3. Connect: reach out and have a conversation with a friend
  4. Help: look for the needs of others around you.
  5. Remember: close your eyes and relive a happy moment in your life.

Write down things for which you are grateful. Do this once a week for 6 weeks, and you will feel happier, less depressed, your sleep quality will improve, and you will be more likely to engage in healthier behaviours, such as exercise. Try this and let us know how you do!
